CONSERVATION vs. RESTORATION
The Difference That Protects Your Collection
Every project begins with Conservation. Rachel Gilberti Fine Arts & Conservations ensures that before any aesthetic intervention (Restoration), the artwork is stable, and all actions are guided by the ethical rigor of reversibility

CONSERVATION
Primary Goal
Stabilize the artwork and prevent damage. The focus is to halt deterioration processes and ensure the longevity of the cultural heritage.
Action
Minimal Intervention. Includes cleaning of surface grime, consolidation of unstable materials (securing paint layers, pest treatment), and control of environmental conditions (humidity, light).
Philosophy
Maximum Preservation of Original Integrity. Follows the ethical principle of reversibility, where the actions taken can be undone in the future without causing harm to the artwork.
Practical Example
Moisture causing mold on an easel painting. Conservation removes the mold, treats the support, and provides guidance on humidity control.
Act of
Prevention and Stabilization.

RESTORATION
Primary Goal
To Restore the Legibility of the Artwork. The focus is on returning the aesthetic reading capacity and historical understanding of the heritage, when it has been compromised
Action
Direct Intervention. Performed only after the Conservation stage is complete. Includes chromatic reintegration (in-painting of minor paint losses) or reconstruction of missing parts (lacunae), provided it is based on historical and documentary evidence.
Philosophy
Aesthetic Harmonization. The intervention must be discernible (perceptible to a close inspection) and always secondary to the original, so as not to falsify the artwork's history.
Practical Example
A tear in a canvas that caused paint loss. Restoration treats the tear and fills the lacuna to harmonize the image.
Ato de
Restoration of Appearance and Identity.
