CONSERVATION vs. RESTORATION
The Difference That Protects Your Collection
Every project begins with Conservation. Rachel Gilberti Fine Arts & Conservations ensures that before any aesthetic intervention (Restoration), the artwork is stable, and all actions are guided by the ethical rigor of reversibility

CONSERVATION
Primary Goal
Is to stabilize the art object in order to slow deterioration, while preserving its current appearance and historical integrity. The aim is to preserve as much of the original artist’s work with minimal interventions using reversible materials and methods that are compatible with the original work.
Action
Minimal Intervention may include surface cleaning, varnish removal, removal of unsightly previous interventions, consolidation of unstable layers, canvas or panel substrate repairs, infilling areas of loss and in-painting to match original artwork in order to maintain a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing final product..
Philosophy
Maximum preservation of the original intent of the work. The conservator works to ensure the artwork is keeps its original form and it can be enjoyed as the artist intended upon its creation. All the work follows specific ethical guidelines to ensure the original artist’s work is preserved and all additional work is reversible and can be removed in the future without causing harm to the object.
Practical Example
Varnish Removal. As the artwork ages, the varnish layer slowly oxidizes over time turning it yellow obscuring the visibility of the piece. Removing the yellowed varnish can significantly change the appearance of the work returning the colors to its original intended splendor
Act of
Prevention and Stabilization from future degradation

RESTORATION
Primary Goal
Is to restore a piece back to its original appearance or function, meaning it focuses primarily on aesthetics rather than its original form. The aim is to render the object aesthetically pleasing to the eye without considering the longterm effects of materials used or the original intent of the artist.
Action
Direct intervention. Restoration allows for the use of any material to reestablish a pleasing finish based on historical and documentary evidence. This may include removal of original finish, invasive repairs, introduction of new materials in an effort to recreate the original finished look of the design.
Philosophy
Aesthetic Harmonization. The intervention may use any means or methods to restore the original work or finish to its original intent
Practical Example
Reestablishing an original design. Some buildings, artwork or object may have been overpainted over the years completely obscuring the original design. The original design may have been extensively damaged rendering conservation cost prohibitive. Research is then undertaken to establish original design and new materials used to recreate the finish
